| Scouting in the Czech Republic |
"Junák - svaz skautů a skautek ČR" - the biggest scout and guide association in the Czech Republic is a member of both WAGGGS and WOSM.
Organization
Most scout units are divided into patrols. Each patrol is led by a patrol-leader - one of the members of the patrol. The unit usually has from 2 to 4 patrols and it is led by adult leaders. Units of cub-scouts, brownies and scouts are not usually coeducated, but you can find some coeducated units in small towns and villages where there are not so many children. On the other hand the units of venture scouts are usually coeducated. The units are associated in groups. In the group there is usually a unit of cub-scouts, a unit of brownies, a unit of girl-scouts, a unit of boy-scouts and a unit of venture scouts (rovers and rangers).
Activities
The units have regular meetings (usually once a week or once in two weeks) and each patrol has its own meetings (as well usually once a week or once in two weeks). The units usually spend one weekend a month on a trip. During the summer holidays we go camping. The standard length of these camps is about 3 weeks. Sometimes two or more units from one group camp together. The campsites are usually out of civilization, there is usually no building, no electricity and just the cold water. During the first days campers build their tents, beds, kitchen, stove, latrine, camp-fire place, mast and everything what they need and at the end they unbuild it again and leave the empty meadow. As you can see, these camps are quite rough, but with a little help even brownies and cub-scouts manage and everybody learns there much about outdoor life.
Besides units usually organize some events which are opened to public, take part in some charitable projects and much more.
"Podsada" tents (see the photos)
"Podsada" tent is typical for the Czech camps. It's a special tent, which is built on kind of walls made of wood. There is much more room in those tents, so they are comfortable for long camping. Most units camp in the podsada tents, but some units prefer indian tee-pees. On expeditions we use common tents (which are used by climbers).
